This has always annoyed me:
Integrity is “doing the right thing when no one is looking.” Anyone else see the problem with that statement?
It infers dishonesty.
It assumes a LACK of integrity.
So, don’t ever say that again. It’s bullshit.
Just DO WHAT’S RIGHT. Period.
You know what’s right…call it your conscience, the Holy Ghost, Jiminy Cricket, Spidey Sense…whatever. You have it in you to know what’s right. I had a mentor that used to define integrity as “knowing what’s right and acting on it.”
Now, I’m not talking about the “correct” answer to a quiz. Of course, you’re not always going to know the square root of 1,245 (without a calculator).
I’m talking about when faced with an ethical decision. When faced with a decision about doing the RIGHT thing, or the EASY thing.
Rarely…let me say that again…RARELY is the right thing the EASY thing. That’s life.
If you have to ask to yourself if something is right or wrong, you already know the answer inside. LISTEN TO THAT.
Don’t be a hypocrite. Integrity is NOT doing the right thing when no one is looking…it’s just doing the right thing (because it’s the right thing).
